Lighthouse Initiative Phase-II: Stakeholder Orientation and Training Conducted in Kasipur, Rayagada

The India Sanitation Coalition, in partnership with Hindalco Industries and the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, conducted a stakeholder orientation and training program for Gram Panchayat–level stakeholders in Kasipur block, Rayagada district, under the Lighthouse Initiative Phase-II. Held on 6 November 2025, the program brought together 98 Gram Panchayat representatives to strengthen capacities for addressing sanitation challenges in tribal and remote geographies.
The training addressed region-specific challenges, including dispersed villages across difficult terrain, limited water availability, and the need for culturally appropriate IEC/BCC approaches. Participants received hands-on exposure to waste segregation practices, composting techniques, and solutions for effective solid and liquid waste management.
Discussions were also held on the preparation of Village Development Plans, with active participation from Gram Panchayat stakeholders and community members. The orientation emphasized behavior change and self-responsibility, with participants sharing field experiences. Women Sarpanches openly discussed challenges and locally driven solutions, and all participants agreed to work towards community mobilization to increase toilet usage and promote improved sanitation practices.
With 410 villages working toward ODF Plus status, Kasipur is progressing towards establishing sustainable and inclusive sanitation systems under the Lighthouse Initiative Phase-II.
Key outcomes of the program included:
  • Commitment to finalize Block Development Plans by December 2025, tailored to remote tribal geographies
  • Enhanced practical understanding of waste segregation, composting, and solid and liquid waste management
  • Strengthened focus on behavior change communication and community ownership
  • Reinforced public–private partnership through district support and Hindalco’s CSR engagement
