India boosts urban waste processing to 76%; swachh bharat and AMRUT drive sanitation overhaul: Puri

India's urban waste processing has seen a rise to over 76% from a mere 17% in 2014, Union Minister Hardeep Singh  Puri  said during the 7th ISC-FICCI Sanitation Awards Ceremony
 
 
"The transformative initiatives led by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi  have instilled a behavioural change towards cleanliness," Puri said through a video address at the conclave.
 
He detailed the contributions of the Swachh Bharat Mission and AMRUT Swachh Bharat Mission  has been pivotal in eradicating the challenge of open defecation in urban areas, which involved the construction of 63 lakh individual and 6.3 lakh public toilets.
