Sujoy Mojumdar

Designation: WASH Specialist, UNICEF India

Having a Master’s in physics from University of Delhi, Sujoy Mojumdar joined the India Forest Service (IFS) in 1991.

During a career spanning 25 years, Sujoy worked in various capacities in 8 districts, including the tribal districts of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, as well as at the state level in Forest department of the Government of Madhya Pradesh and in the Forest Survey of India, Govt. of India from 1991 to 2010. In 2010, he joined as the Director of the flagship National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP), in the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Govt of India, a charge held up to 2013. During this period, he was involved in the revision of the NRDWP guidelines. Shifting to the sanitation sector, he was the Director of the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, from 2013 to October 2014.

With the launch of the Swachh Bharat Mission, he became the Director Swachh Bharat Mission, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Govt of India in October 2014. He was intrinsically involved in the preparation of the concept of the Swachh Bharat Mission and the finalization of the Mission guidelines and planning its subsequent rollout.

From March 2015 till date, he is working as Senior WASH Specialist with UNICEF at New Delhi. He provides technical assistance on sanitation to the Governments efforts on rural sanitation. He is involved on coordinating the UNICEF assistance to the Swachh Bharat Mission at the central and across 16 states of the country. He has supported the development of the national 10 year rural sanitation strategy released this year.

Sujoy has represented the Government of India and UNICEF in many International conferences including South Asian Conference on sanitation SACOSAN V at Kathmandu Nepal in 2013 and SACOSAN VI at Dhaka Bangladesh in 2016, the World Water Week at Stockholm in 2013 and the UN 3R Conference in Indonesia in 2014. He has visited large number of countries in his official capacity including the USA, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Peru, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal.

He is currently working on ODF Sustainability, beyond ODF interventions (ODF+) and the water supply programme with specific focus on capacity building of PRIs and monitoring of WASH coverage in rural areas.

He is part of a major UNICEF response to the Covid Pandemic.
